SOME QUOTES FROM OUR RESIDENTS & VOLUNTEERS

“A few months ago, my two children and I were evicted from our home.  I brought this on myself by mismanaging our income.  My family and I have been residents at Nicholas House for several months now-the Nicholas House program has provided my family and me shelter, stability, discipline, structure and accountability.  I have been able to set a number of goals and I am already well on my way to fulfilling them.  I have come to understand that I will get out of this program what I am willing to put into it.  And that is – self-sufficiency”                                                  - Mother of 2 children

“When my children and I learned that our lives were about to take a terrible twist for the worst, we were devastated, hurt and confused.  We contacted scores of homeless shelters, looking for a place to be able to stay together as a family.  Just as we were about ready to give up, we were rescued by Nicholas House.  Since the time we have been at Nicholas House, we have learned to apply humility, honesty and accountability to our lives.  I would like to thank Nicholas House for helping me and my children to change old habits into new ones and for helping us make a real difference in our future.”                                                             - Mom of 3 children

“When I came through the Nicholas House front doors for the first time with my 5 children, I was at my lowest of lows.  Years of negative self-talk - I can never find a job; I would never be able to pass the GED test; my children and I will always be poor…- are just some of the thoughts that constantly were in my head.  After several months of being at Nicholas House, I have passed my GED test and have enrolled into a healthcare vocational training program.  Now, I tell myself over and over that I CAN and I WILL and I DO!”                                                                   -   Mom & 5 children

“The first voice I heard at Nicholas House was that of my Case Manager and it was a voice of hope and support.  I was reluctant and weary after weeks of homelessness and almost lost the wonderful opportunity that was before me and my 4 children to be a part of the Nicholas House program.  My Case Manager saw my indecision and began to nurture and steer me in a positive direction, and slowly but surely, into a new way of life.  I have just graduated from a welding program, at the top of my class, and my children have also benefited from the safety, security and family environment that is an integral part of Nicholas House.  Thank you Nicholas House for all the weight that you have carried on my behalf - for parenting my children while I was in job training and for just being there for all of us.”                                 - Father of 4 children

THIS IS WHAT SOME OF OUR VOLUNTEERS HAVE TO SAY….

“While volunteering at the Nicholas House summer camp, I always was welcomed in the morning with a hug and hugged good-bye at the end of the day.  What better way to help and support homeless children than by giving them the time and attention they need through play and learning.   For me, it helped me to understand that through conflict and hard times, children have the capacity to bounce back when given the right opportunities and the right environment.”    Summer Camp College Volunteer

“Wow!  To sum it up…volunteering at Nicholas House has been a very rewarding experience!  I have enjoyed working with the children and encouraging their parents to meet their goals during their time at Nicholas House.   Nicholas House helps entire homeless families in need of shelter, food, education and even with laundry facilities!  Georgia families are very fortunate to have a place like Nicholas House available to them in their time of need.  Thank you for allowing me to participate in your programs.”                                           Evening Childcare Volunteer

I ONLY HAD THREE OR FOUR HOURS A MOINTH TO OFFER THE VOLUNTEER PROGRAM AT NICHOLAS HOUSE.  I DIDN’T FEEL THAT THERE WOULD BE A PLACE FOR ME WITH SUCH A SMALL AMOUNT OF TIME TO GIVE.  BUT NICHOLAS HOUSE FOUND A WAY SOTHAT I COULD BECOME A PART OF THEIR VOLUNTEER PROGRAM.  EVERY OTHER WEEK, I DRIVE THE SHOPPING SHUTTLE FROM NICHOLAS HOUSE TO NEARBY GROCERY AND DEPARTMENT STORES.  DUE TO THE FACT THAT THE FAMILIES ONLY HAVE BUS TRANSPORTATION AVAILABLE TO THEM, THIS IS A SPECIAL AND SMALL WAYTO MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN THEIR LIVES.
